Behavior & Compatibility

The Yellowtail Damselfish is known for being one of the least aggressive damselfish, making it a solid option for community reef tanks. However, it can still show territorial behavior, especially in smaller tanks or when competing for space.

It does best with other semi-aggressive or peaceful fish that can hold their own without provoking conflict. Avoid housing with highly aggressive species or overcrowding the tank, as this can increase territorial behavior.

Diet & Feeding

Yellowtail Damselfish are omnivores and very easy to feed. They will readily accept:

  • flakes and pellets
  • frozen mysis shrimp
  • brine shrimp
  • general marine foods

Feed 1–2 times daily. They are not picky eaters and adapt quickly to most feeding routines.

Tank Setup

A minimum of 30 gallons is recommended, though larger tanks help reduce territorial behavior.

For best results, provide:

  • Live rock for hiding and territory
  • Open swimming space
  • Stable water conditions
  • Moderate water flow

They will establish a small territory within the tank, especially around rock structures.

Reef Safety

The Yellowtail Damselfish is reef safe and will not harm corals or invertebrates. It’s a great choice for reef aquariums due to its durability and minimal impact on the system.

Acclimation & First 48 Hours

This is a hardy species that adapts quickly:

  • Acclimate slowly to match water parameters
  • Introduce into a stable tank
  • Provide structure for territory

They typically begin feeding quickly and settle in without issues.
