Behavior & Compatibility
Yellow Watchman Gobies are peaceful, bottom-dwelling fish that spend most of their time perched on the sand or near burrows. They are generally non-aggressive and do well in community reef tanks.
They can be territorial around their chosen burrow but rarely cause issues with other fish. They are best kept singly unless paired intentionally.
They pair exceptionally well with pistol shrimp, forming a natural partnership where the shrimp builds and maintains a burrow while the goby acts as a lookout.
Diet & Feeding
Yellow Watchman Gobies are carnivores that feed on small crustaceans in the wild.
In captivity, they will readily accept:
- frozen mysis shrimp
- brine shrimp
- finely chopped marine foods
- sinking pellets
Feed 1–2 times daily. They typically adapt quickly to feeding and are not difficult to maintain.
Tank Setup
A minimum of 30 gallons is recommended.
For best results, provide:
- Sandy substrate for burrowing
- Live rock for structure
- Stable water conditions
- Moderate water flow
They rely heavily on the substrate and will establish a burrow or territory near rockwork.
Reef Safety
The Yellow Watchman Goby is completely reef safe and will not harm corals or invertebrates. It is an excellent addition to reef aquariums due to its peaceful nature and compatibility.
Acclimation & First 48 Hours
This is a hardy species that adapts well:
- Acclimate slowly to match tank conditions
- Provide immediate access to sand and hiding spots
- Keep lighting moderate during introduction
They may hide initially but usually settle in quickly and begin feeding within a short period.
