The Green Chromis Damselfish (Chromis viridis) is one of the most popular saltwater fish for reef tanks, known for its shimmering blue-green color and constant mid-water movement. This species is widely considered one of the best beginner saltwater fish, offering a rare combination of hardiness, peaceful behavior, and schooling activity that brings life to any aquarium.

Behavior & Compatibility

Green Chromis are active, open-water swimmers that naturally form groups and hover above reef structures in the wild. They are one of the few saltwater fish that can create a schooling effect in aquariums when kept in proper groups.

They are peaceful and mix well with most reef-safe fish, including clownfish, gobies, and wrasses. However, they should not be housed with aggressive or predatory species, as they can be easily stressed.

While often sold as schooling fish, smaller groups can sometimes develop hierarchy over time. Keeping them in groups and providing adequate space helps reduce stress and maintain more natural behavior.

Diet & Feeding

Green Chromis are omnivores that feed throughout the day in the water column, naturally consuming small plankton and suspended food.

In captivity, they are very easy to feed and will accept:

  • high-quality flakes or pellets
  • frozen mysis shrimp
  • brine shrimp
  • finely chopped marine foods

Feed 1–2 times daily, or more frequently in active tanks. Newly introduced fish may benefit from smaller, more frequent feedings to help them settle in.

Tank Setup

A minimum of 30 gallons is recommended, but larger tanks are ideal if keeping multiple fish.

For best results, provide:

  • Open swimming space in the middle of the tank
  • Live rock or structure for security
  • Stable reef water parameters
  • Moderate to strong water flow

Green Chromis spend most of their time in open water but rely on nearby structure for safety when needed.

Reef Safety

Green Chromis are completely reef safe and will not harm corals or invertebrates. They are an excellent choice for reef aquariums because they add movement without disrupting coral placement.

Acclimation & First 48 Hours

Green Chromis are hardy but still benefit from a controlled introduction:

  • Acclimate slowly to match salinity and temperature
  • Keep lighting moderate at first
  • Add in groups when possible to reduce stress
  • Ensure peaceful tankmates during introduction

They typically adapt quickly and begin feeding soon after being introduced into a stable system.
