The Black and Gold Chromis (Neoglyphidodon nigroris) is a bold and hardy saltwater fish known for its striking contrast between dark body coloration and golden highlights. While often grouped with chromis species, this fish develops a more assertive personality as it matures, making it a durable and active addition to the right aquarium setup.

  • Diet: Omnivore
  • Reef Safe: Yes
  • Minimum Tank Size: 30+ gallons
  • Max Size: ~5 inches
  • Origin: Indo-Pacific

Behavior & Compatibility

Juvenile Black and Gold Chromis are relatively calm, but as they mature, they can become more territorial and assertive. Unlike typical schooling chromis, this species is best kept individually or with tankmates that can handle mild aggression.

They do well with semi-aggressive fish such as clownfish, wrasses, and certain gobies, but should not be housed with overly passive species or in overcrowded tanks.

Providing space and structure helps reduce aggression and allows more natural behavior to develop.

Diet & Feeding

Black and Gold Chromis are omnivores and easy to feed.

They will accept:

  • flakes and pellets
  • frozen mysis shrimp
  • brine shrimp
  • general marine foods

Feed 1–2 times daily. They are aggressive feeders and adapt quickly to most feeding routines.

Tank Setup

A minimum of 30 gallons is recommended, though larger tanks are ideal as the fish matures.

For best results, provide:

  • Live rock for territory and structure
  • Open swimming space
  • Stable water parameters
  • Moderate water flow

This species benefits from defined territory and space to reduce stress and aggression.

Reef Safety

The Black and Gold Chromis is considered reef safe and will not harm corals or invertebrates. It can be kept in reef aquariums without issue when properly fed and maintained.

Acclimation & First 48 Hours

This is a hardy species that adapts well:

  • Acclimate slowly to match tank conditions
  • Provide hiding spots immediately
  • Avoid aggressive tankmates during introduction

They typically begin feeding quickly and adjust without major issues.
